You may remember Back Door Winery (opened in 2015) for its crazy case sales and highway flappy men. Well, a lot has changed since those days. In 2020, new owners stepped onto the scene – seasoned grape growers farming the 42 acres of Double Barrel Vineyards in Oliver. A small amount of those grapes went into their vineyard label – Okanagan Hills Estates.

New winemaker, Lee Holland is a seasoned veteran in the Okanagan. He’s worked at Sumac Ridge, Dirty Laundry and Hillside to name a few. At Back Door, he crafts clean, aromatic and fun whites to be enjoyed any day of the week. But he doesn’t stop there; the reds are robust and full bodied with the Merlot earning a Silver Medal with Wine Align.

Back Door Winery is a lot of fun to visit – they keep a low profile and share honest and easygoing wines! And, for the summer of 2023, they’ll be serving awesome snacks and lunches on their patio, courtesy of Grannies fruit stand (a Summerland icon!).

Jesse Gill owns and runs Back Door Winery. He used to work in the lumber industry in Vancouver Island and later started farming berries in Fraser Valley in the early 1980s. He bought Double Barrel Vineyards near Oliver and Osoyoos in 2008. In 2020, he acquired a property on Jones Flat Road in Summerland, where he took over the vineyard and aimed to produce great wines from the grapes grown on the land.
